Bobservations: The State of Renovate
Although Sunridge was incorporated as a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization in 1989, it was not until May of 2003 that Sunridge moved into our current home at 42299 Winchester Road in Temecula. It was such an exciting time in our church’s rich history. We were able to watch the amazing transformation of our new facility from a warehouse in the industrial part of town into a beautiful, functional place of worship where we are able to accomplish our mission of helping people find and follow Jesus!
Completed Projects
Fast forward from when we first occupied our facility to 2014, and the 11 years of ministry had taken its toll. From the landscape and parking lot, to the carpet, walls, and lighting, everything had started showing major signs of wear and neglect. That is when we began our first real renovation project.
The Front Entry Landscape
This was the perfect opportunity to utilize a volunteer work force to replace the 15,000 sq. ft. of turf. We were able to create a drought tolerant landscape, cutting our water usage by approximately 57%.
Multi-Purpose Room
Through the use of volunteers, we removed the old, smelly carpet, the oversized stage, the deteriorating curtains, and began an exciting refresh of the most used room on our campus. In addition to fresh paint, a stained concrete floor, legit basketball hoops, a high-definition projector, and barn doors were added, along with a portable stage for maximum flexibility.
Parking Lot
Temecula’s weather is pretty harsh on blacktop, and after eleven years the lines to distinguish parking spaces were almost invisible. Not only that, but cracks in the surface were creating sinkholes. In November of 2014, we were able to slurry coat and stripe our 5.75-acre parking lot, giving it a new luster and better first impression as people entered onto our campus.
Adult Classroom and Bathroom
During the snowfall of December 2014, our leaky roof could not hold back all of the melting snow on the west side of our building and significant water damage occurred. Through the strategic use of insurance funds, we were able to renovate Room 107 (now Room 122) and the adjacent bathroom, giving us yet another glimpse into the future we desired. This included new flooring, paint, counters, and storage, as well as vastly improved tech with 70” HDTV and ceiling mounted speakers.
New Roof
Since the time that Sunridge gained occupancy in our building the roof leaked. Over seventeen years, many patches and temporary repairs were applied. It was clear before we could update any other areas, we needed to resolve this issue. In March of 2016, a new 25-year membrane roof was installed on our 54,000 ft. facility. This was a key project as now we had the confidence to move forward with other upgrades, knowing they would not be damaged from a roof that leaked.
Bridge Builders Room
Sunridge is committed to creating a safe and nurturing place for everyone. Our Bridge Builders ministry allows families with special needs to be a part of our mission. We listened to families with special needs, and raised $10,000 to renovate the Bridge Builders room to meet those needs, including flooring, light coverings, tactile boards, counters, sink, furniture, and privacy areas, etc.
Kitchen
Our kitchen was yet another area of our facility where time and use were beginning to show the strain of all of the ministry that happens on our campus. The flooring and cabinets were worn out as were the appliances. Thanks to many generous volunteers, in 2018, new cabinets, backsplash, appliances, and flooring gave a dramatic improvement to the look and functionality of the kitchen.
Hallways
While this may be one of the longest running projects we have ever had at Sunridge, it is also one of the most dramatic and satisfying. We knew that our main hallways were having an unintended impact on the first impression of visitors to our church. In 2016 we began a capital fund to refresh our look. We completed the hallway renovation in 2019 – DEBT FREE!
Worship Center
Upon completion of the hallway renovation, we all felt the disconnect between the fresh and bright new look of the hallway and the dark, outdated tones of the Worship Center. We wanted to take advantage of the special pricing we received from our flooring vendor to ensure maximum stewardship as well as a consistent look from the hallway into the Worship Center. I’m thrilled to report that as of February 2020, the Worship Center is complete! The walls have been painted, the carpet has been replaced, new color-matched sound absorption panels are installed, new sconces are on the walls, and we are working on finally getting a cross up! And all God’s people said, “Amen!”
Future Projects
It’s hard for me to think about the future without humbly acknowledging the past. I am filled with tremendous gratitude and awe when I think about how many of you have sacrificed your time, talent, and treasure to see our mission fulfilled. My sincere hope is that this list of accomplishments gives you confidence and trust in Sunridge as we move forward. I believe that we have demonstrated patience and stewardship with a focus on mission as we have taken on these improvements. Yet, as much as we have completed, we know there is still a long way to go! Here’s a quick glimpse of the future renovations planned for Sunridge:
- Upstairs Classroom Flooring (estimated cost $40,000)
- MPR Phase II (sound and lighting) (estimated cost $100,000)
- Worship Center Chairs (estimated cost $40,000)
- Exterior – Playground, hang-out areas, lighting, etc.
