All Church Fast
Monday-Wednesday (Oct 21-23)
Break the Fast with Soup & Bread on Wednesday in the Youth Room 6:30-7:15pm
Concert of Worship & Prayer in the Worship Center 7:15-8:30pm
In our current sermon series, “What About…?” from the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5-7) we have moved into Matthew 6, which includes the teaching of Jesus on the “spiritual disciplines” of generosity (literally “alms giving”), prayer, and fasting. In addition to teaching about fasting we also want to put it into practice.
Our three-day fast will culminate in a potluck supper (soup and bread) on Wednesday in the Youth Room from 6:30-7:15pm followed by a concert of worship and prayer in the worship center from 7:15-8:30pm. Pastor Jed will lead the worship. This is certainly a kid-friendly event, so bring them along!
There are many different ways to fast. For example we can fast from food and just drink water or juice only, we can eat only vegetables and/or fruit only (sometimes referred to as a “Daniel Fast,” see Daniel 1:8-17); we can choose not to eat any sugar or desserts, we can fast one or two meals a day, we can fast from sun-up to sun-down. We can even fast from hobbies or different forms of technology such as television and/or social media. The idea is to devote ourselves to “listening prayer”[1] when we would normally be engaging in whatever activity from which we are fasting. Seek the Lord regarding the most appropriate fast for you.
What Is the Intent of Our Fast?
Three possibilities:
- Personal breakthroughs for yourself or a close family member.
- The opportunity at Sunridge to grow closer to God and one another during this transition season as we seek His will for the next season of ministry fruitfulness.
- The heartfelt desire for God to cause our hearts for the things that break His heart, including the lost, poor, sick, and broken-hearted right here in the Valley.
[1] Listening Prayer is time spent in a dialogue with Jesus where we express our heart, but also wait and listen for His gentle whisper (see 1 Kings 19:11-13).
