The Unconventional Life of an Image Bearer

Britt Sipe

Ruth is one of only two books in the Bible named for women. This is especially notable because women were considered among the most vulnerable demographics of the day, and Ruth was particularly inconsequential. Not only was she a Moabite (enemies of the Israelites for centuries), she was also widowed, poor and an immigrant. However, this Moabitess rises above her circumstances. A closer look at the book of Ruth reveals this is more than a biblical “Hallmark love story.” Ruth is an innovative, determined and gritty young woman, who experienced “khesed” (the loyal love of God), lives that love, and in doing so prompts others to do likewise. Ruth reminds us that each of us count, regardless of status or standing, because we bear the image of the Creator.
