There are some things we know about David: He took the long route from shepherd to king. He could fight. He was an accomplished musician. He was loyal. He felt deeply. He was a passionate worshipper. He had unshakeable faith in God. He wrote songs that were lyrically moving and powerful.
All of David, the man, emerges in chapter twenty-two of 2 Samuel: his battle experience, his unique confidence in God, his raw emotions – all of him, becomes manifest in the lyrics of the song that is recorded as chapter twenty-two of 2 Samuel. The entire chapter is a song that David sang to the Lord. Because of so many parallels, some scholars believe that chapter twenty-two is the draft form of Psalm 18. Both are the work of a man who was a deep well of experiences, thoughts and emotions, coupled with remarkable skill in expressing them.
All of this has gotten me thinking. I’ve been wondering about how it is God would like me to do similarly. How do I take my experiences, emotions, skills (limited though they be) and express praise back to God that results in bolstering someone else? How do I, as a modern day Christ-follower, take “all of me” and put it out there, for all to see. Now, I’m no David so songwriting is out, making my chances of Psalm publication slim. But there’s something for sure, since God delights in me (v20) and I, like David am, fearfully and wonderfully made. (Psalm 139:14)
